#KnowYourOCAthleticsStaff: Matthew Gay
With only a few athletic teams competing this fall, we knew the Olivet College fans are going to miss sports just as much as our student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff. We are hoping to fill that void by having some special content on our website throughout the semester. On Mondays, you will get to #KnowYourOCAthleticsStaff through some questions and answers with our head coaches and athletic administration. |
Question 1: What is your name?
Answer 1: Matthew Gay
Q2: What is your current job title?
A2: Head Coach – Olivet College Clay Target Team / Outdoor Recreation
Q3: How long have you been at Olivet?
A3: Since August 1, 2019
Q4: What made you decide to come to Olivet?
A4: After experiencing a large university, the draw for me was the opportunity to start a program from the ground up. The smaller college setting feels more personal and welcoming than the larger school. I enjoy the challenge of building a program from nothing. The other major factor that led to my current position with Olivet was the support offered by the institution and the athletic department. The success of any program requires such support. I truly enjoy every day on campus and working with my athletes.
Q5: What is the number one reason you tell a prospective student-athlete on why he/she should attend Olivet?
A5: The full support by the athletic department and the College mentioned above combined with the personal feel of a smaller institution.
Q6: Where did you attend college?
A6: I attended Mott Community College and completed my EMT school at Genesys Regional Medical Center's training center. I am also a tradesman and hold 4 Professional licenses in the State of Michigan.
Q7: Did you play any sports in college?
A7: No. A serious football injury prevented my participation at the college level.
Q8: What is an interesting fact about yourself that nobody knows?
A8: I read medical journals for fun. The Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, is one of my favorite publications to read studies from.
Q9: Family? Spouse's name, and children's name(s)?
A9: Wife: Cheryl Gay, Children: Travis, MacKenzie, Camron and Carriann, Granddaughter (and future Olympic Trap Shooter): Sophia
Q10: Any other information you want to share about yourself?
A10: I write for multiple national publications and have found it to be one of the most enjoyable endeavors I pursue. I can be a bit of a grammar hawk at times but I truly enjoy the study and employment of the written English language.
