Bio
Outstanding football player and later defensive football coach for
the Comets, he brought honor to Olivet in a period when victories
were scarce.
During the 1961 and 1962 seasons, he was a mainstay of the Comets
defensive backfield. In 1963, he was shifted to quarterback and led
the team in total offense with 253 yards while passing for 610
more. In 1964, his senior year, he was shifted again to tailback
and led the MIAA with 495 yards rushing and 360 passing for a total
of 855. He ranked 13th among the small college players of the
nation in total offense. MIAA coaches picked him as Most Valuable
Player in 1964, first time in history that a Comet had been
selected. He was an officer of Phi Alpha Pi Fraternity.
He taught and coached football at Bellevue High School in 1965-66,
then coached and taught physical education at Central Michigan
University from 1967 to 1969. He returned to his alma mater to
serve as defensive football coach, taught physical education and
was an admission counselor from 1970 to 1971. He was head football
coach at Benton Harbor from 1971 to 1974, and since 1974 has been
head football coach at Cheboygan High School.
Reflecting his conviction that training of the body must be teamed
with training of the mind and heart, he received a master’s
degree from Central Michigan University in 1967.
His fellow high school coaches recently acknowledged his coaching
competence by choosing him as one of six Michigan coaches to select
the Detroit Free Press All-State Teams.
In appreciation of his achievements on the campus and his
continued excellence in his career, Olivet is proud to induct him
into the Olivet College Athletic Hall of Fame.
