Bio
Doane L. Renshaw was an outstanding Comet wrestler who contributed
to Red-and-White mat fortunes as a winner and a leader. He served
as captain in 1970-71 and 1971-72, was Most Valuable Wrestler in
1960-70 and 1972-73, and was an MIAA Champion and All-MIAA pick in
1973. Comet Head Coach Jare Klein said of Renshaw: “He was an
excellent leader and one of the main men who created the strong
tradition of wrestling at Olivet College.” Renshaw’s
four-year record was 45-11-2 with 26 pins, a record he compiled in
spite of missing a full season due to injury. Renshaw, who wrestled
at 177 and 190 weights, was part of the Comet mat squads that won
two consecutive MIAA titles to start Olivet on a streak that
reached right at the time of this induction.
He majored in biology at Olivet and began medical training at
Wayne State University upon graduation. In 1976, he joined the U.S.
Navy and became a pilot. He was reported missing October 18, 1978,
when his fighter jet crashed into the Atlantic Ocean during landing
maneuvers on the U.S.S. America.
In observance of his contributions to Olivet College athletics and
service to his country, he was inducted posthumously into the
Olivet College Athletic Hall of Fame.
