Bio
An all-around athlete at Olivet, James McCloughan excelled as a
Comet wrestler for four years in the 130 lb. weight class. His
overall record was 32-11-1 and during his junior and senior seasons
of 1967 and 1968 he served as captain, won MIAA championships, was
voted Most Valuable Wrestler by his team-mates. All of this was
accomplished in a sport that he never competed in prior to his
enrollment at Olivet. McCloughan credited his achievements to the
Comet Head Wrestling Coach Fritz Lewis.
McCloughan played four years of football as a defensive linebacker
and back and offensive back and end, and two years of baseball as a
second and third baseman.
In other campus activated at Olivet McCloughan’s credits
include soloist and member of choir, chorus, and madrigal groups,
membership in Kappa Sigma Alpha, and service as resident advisor
his junior and senior years.
Academically he made the Dean’s List for several semesters
and graduated in 1968 with a B.A. in Sociology. After service in
Viet Nam as medic in the Army (Combat Medics Badge, two Purple
Hearts, and three bronze Stars) he went to South Haven to teach and
coach at South Haven High School. He continued his studies at
Western Michigan University where he received an M.A. in Counseling
and Personnel in 1972.
For his many accomplishments at Olivet and his demonstrated
devotion to the principles of Christian living, he was inducted
into the Olivet College Athletic Hall of Fame.
