Volleyball team opens season with two losses
The Olivet College volleyball team kicked off its 2011 season with two losses tonight at the Marietta College River City Classic. The Comets were defeated by Kenyon (Ohio) College in three sets (27-25, 25-13, 25-16) and the host Pioneers in four sets (25-14, 16-25, 25-13, 25-16).

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Olivet College volleyball team kicked off its 2011 season with two losses tonight at the Marietta College River City Classic. The Comets were defeated by Kenyon (Ohio) College in three sets (27-25, 25-13, 25-16) and the host Pioneers in four sets (25-14, 16-25, 25-13, 25-16).
Against Kenyon, senior Jordy Bergeron (Muskegon/Mona Shores) and freshman Emma Brann (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) recorded six kills apiece. Senior Lacee Boone (Otsego) and sophomore Cassie McDonald (Battle Creek/Pennfield) each finished with 11 set assists. Freshman Megan VanderVlucht (McBain) topped the defense with 10 digs.
Against Marietta, Bergeron led the front row attack with nine kills, followed by junior Kristen Sharpley (Marshall) with four. McDonald posted team-highs in set assists (16) and digs (10). At the service line, McDonald and sophomore Kaitlyn Salhaney (Caledonia/East Kentwood) each served up three aces.
Olivet will wrap-up its trip to Ohio tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match against Methodist (N.C.) University and 1 p.m. match against Oberlin (Ohio) College.
