Swimming and diving teams lead University of Chicago Invitational after session one

The Olivet College men's and women's swimming and diving teams stand in first-place after the first session of the University of Chicago Invitational at the Myers-McLoraine Pool in Chicago. The invitational wraps-up tomorrow with session two at 10:30 a.m. ET, and session three at 6:30 p.m. ET.

The men's had four first-place finishes en route to a team total of 351 points, while the women recorded a pair of first-place finishes and score 317 points. The host Maroons are second.

On the men's side, Yury Bylina (Minsk, Belarus) captured the 200-yard individual medley with a school record time of 1:58.02. Olivet also took first-place in both relays. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico), Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland), Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central) and Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt) clocked in at 1:28.43. Fetters and Powers along with Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason) and Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario/Silverthorn) won the 400-yard medley relay (3:37.01).

On the one-meter diving board, Olivet swept the top three spots. Justin Hulsebos (Wayland) was first with 412.90 points. After him was Shawn Bergman (Chelsea) and Andrew Wasson (Grand Ledge) with 405.70 and 386.75 points, respectively.

The Comets had four swimmers finish in the top six of the 500-yard freestyle. Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) was the runner-up (4:55.16), followed by Jason Wheatley (Portage/Central), fourth (4:57.80); Nick Stone (Westland/John Glenn), fifth (4:58.78) and Nathan Busscher (Hamilton/Holland Christian), sixth (4:59.90). Powers swam to a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (:22.54).

On the women's side, Amy Johnson (Gaylord) was first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.90 seconds. She also swam the anchor leg of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.29). Joining Johnson on the relay was Lauren Kimble (Holland), Kalee Redder (Grandville/Jenison) and Jackie Taylor (Plainwell).

There were three female student-athletes, who finished in the top six of the 500-yard freestyle. Laura Herzog (St. Joseph) was second (5:26.52), followed by Sarah Boyd (Napoleon, Ohio), fourth (5:33.69); and Kelly Schulze (Kalamazoo/Schulze), sixth (5:40.92).

Olivet's highest finisher in the 200-yard individual medley was Taylor as she placed third (2:22.65). The 400-yard medley relay team of Herzog, Kimble, Taylor and Erin Tramper (Jenison) came in second-place (4:16.79).

Following tomorrow's action, the Comets resume Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action Saturday, Jan. 20, when they travel to compete against Alma College.
