Olivet College’s Essen and Fetzer earn All-MIAA honors
Olivet College seniors Emma Essen and Ann Fetzer have earned 2018 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Second Team honors for women’s soccer.
FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College seniors Emma Essen and Ann Fetzer have earned 2018 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Second Team honors for women's soccer.
Under the leadership of first-year head coach Doug Carter, the Comets posted an 8-8-2 overall regular season record, including a 4-4 mark against conference opponents. All-league honors are based on a players' statistics and performance during the eight-game MIAA schedule.
In the eight MIAA games, Essen scored five goals, including three game-winning goals, for 10 points. She also took 26 total shots. Overall, Essen ranks third in the MIAA with 24 points on 11 goals and two assists. A 2017 All-MIAA First Team selection, she has six game-winning goals.
Fetzer started all eight games and played 712 of a possible 717 minutes for the Comets on the back line. As a defense, Olivet surrendered only nine goals and post three 1-0 shutouts among its four wins. Overall, Fetzer started 17 games and played every minute in 10 games.
The Comets travel to play Albion College tomorrow in the first round of the 2018 MIAA Tournament. Game time at the Davis Athletic Complex is 1 p.m. The winner of the game will play at top seed Hope College in the semifinals next Wednesday, Oct. 31, starting at 7 p.m.
