The Olivet College women's soccer team ended the 2009 season with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Saint Mary's (Ind.) College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.
Olivet got on the scoreboard just 5:57 into the game when sophomore Lizzy Julian (Mattawan) dented the net with a shot from 15 yards out. Sophomore Danielle Mellor (Macomb/Regina) passed the ball from the midfield stripe down the field to freshman Marcee Lettinga (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central). Lettinga sent a through pass to Julian, who buried the shot for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Later in the half, the Comets had two shots clang off the cross bar and nearly fall into the goal.
The score remained until 1-0 at halftime and stayed that way until there was 12:22 left in the game when Sam Smoger scored the equalizer for the Belles. Saint Mary's had two chances in the first 2:30 of the first overtime period. Olivet also had two shots in the first extra period. In the second overtime period, the Comets had all of the scoring opportunities. With five seconds left, a Belle was called for a foul just outside the box, and the Olivet shot sailed just high.
For the game, Olivet had a 24-10 margin in shots, and 13-6 edge in shots-on-goal. Julian took 12 of the shots, which included five on-goal. Junior keeper Megan Colby (Sparta/Cedar Springs) was the keeper for all 110 minutes and made five saves.
