Women’s soccer team beats Rochester, 2-1

Freshman Ashley Buyce (Portage/Portage Central) scored the game-winning goal, as the Olivet College women's soccer team defeated Rochester College, 2-1, today in Olivet. With the win, the Comets have a 5-2 overall record and equal their win total from the 2006 season.
After a scoreless first half, freshman Kayla Durham (Woodland/Lakewood) scored her first collegiate goal in the 16th minute of the second half. Durham gathered a pass from freshman Justine Nolen (Fowlerville) and sent a shot past the Rochester keeper. The Warriors tied the game in the 75th minute. In the 85th minute, Buyce was moving down the left side of the box. She received the ball from junior Natalie Lopez (Holland/West Ottawa) and sent a hard shot to the far post and into the net.
For the game, Olivet held a decisive 35-9 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Buyce and Durham along with senior Shannah Fisher (Delton/Delton-Kellogg) finished with six shots each, while junior Cori Barrera (East Lansing) had five. In goal, freshman Sarah Westen (Grand Ledge) played all 90 minutes and made seven saves.
The Comets will travel to play Manchester (Ind.) College Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
