UOlivet wrestling trio ready to compete at NCAA Division III Championships
OLIVET, Mich. – Seniors Tyler Herrema, Benyamin Kamali and Dylan Phelps from The University of Olivet wrestling team are ready to compete at the 2025 NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island. The brackets for the 10 weight classes have been released by the NCAA.
Kamali earned the No. 5 seed in the 125-pound bracket and will face Isaic Paulino from Roanoke (Va.) College in his opening match. He enters the championships ranked No. 10 in the most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll, while Paulino is No. 9. Kamali has a 27-2 record this season. Twenty-two of his wins scored bonus points, with 10 pins, seven technical falls and five major decisions. Kamali's lone losses were in the championship match at the Trine (Ind.) University Invitational, 11-9 to Tyler Hisey from Indiana Tech, and at the NCAA Region V Tournament, 12-2 to Christian Guzman from North Central (Ill.) College.
Phelps is unseeded in the 141-pound bracket and will wrestle No. 7 seed Jake Eckerle from Johnson & Wales (R.I.) University in his first match. He is making a return trip to the championships after qualifying in 2024. Phelps enters the championships with a 29-7 record, scoring bonus points in 17 wins (one forfeit, three pins, 11 technical falls and two major decisions). Three of his losses were decided by three points or less.
Herrema is unseeded in the 149-pound bracket and will face No. 8 seed Zach Sato from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in his opening match. He enters the championships with a 30-4 record. Herrema had a 22-match win streak snapped in the NCAA Region V championship match. Of his 30 wins, 22 earned bonus points (one forfeit, six pins, five technical falls and 10 major decisions).
