UOlivet wrestling finishes fourth at NCAA Division III Region V Tournament, three Comets qualify for NCAA Division III National Championships
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Olivet wrestling team placed fourth at the 2025 NCAA Division III Region V Tournament, hosted by Wabash (Ind.) College and at Knowling Fieldhouse. Three Comets finished in the top three of their respective weight class to punch their tickets to the 2025 NCAA Division III National Championships. In addition, the UOlivet coaches received the Regional Tournament Staff of the Year award.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Qualifying for the national championships are senior Benyamin Kamali at 125 pounds, senior Dylan Phelps at 141 pounds and senior Tyler Herrema at 149 pounds.
- Kamali posted a 3-1 record to finish second in his weight class. After winning his semifinal match, 11-4, he fell to top seed Christian Guzman from North Central, 12-2, in the championship match.
- Phelps lost his semifinal match but bounced back to beat Sabri Sino from Millikin (Ill.) University, 12-5. In the third-place bout, Phelps defeated Desmond Diggs from Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University, 1-0. The only point in the match was an escape in the second period. It was the third win for Phelps over Diggs this season, and all three were decided by a single point.
- Herrema had a 4-1 record to earn a second-place finish. He scored a takedown in overtime to win his semifinal match, 4-1, over Jalin Conner from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Herrema fell to the No. 1 seed Daniel Uribe from Wabash in the championship match.
- At 133 pounds, senior Robert Davids was eighth.
- At 157 pounds, senior Ramiro Gurrero finished fifth.
- At 174 pounds, senior Jay Shaull wrestled to a fourth-place finish. He narrowly lost the third-place match, 9-7, to Tyler Bodevetz from Ohio Wesleyan University.
- At 197 pounds, senior Kody Krupp came back to place fifth.
- At 285 pounds, senior Boe Eckman placed eighth.

- 149: Tyler Herrema – 4-1 record – 2nd-place – won 9-1 major decision over Sampson Ross (Adrian), won 17-1 technical fall over CJ Briner (Trine), won 12-4 major decision over Brendan Connolly (Chicago), won 4-1 SV-1 over Jalin Connor (Wisconsin-Whitewater), lost 17-2 technical fall to Daniel Uribe (Wabash)
