Herrema chosen MIAA Wrestler of the Week
HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – The University of Olivet senior Tyler Herrema has been chosen the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week.
"Tyler has really found his offense lately and is scoring on top as well," said Olivet head coach Brandon Brissette. "The more he continues to open up, guys can not keep up with him."
Wrestling at 149 pounds, Herrema won both of his matches at the University of Chicago (UChicago) Triangular. In his first match, he won a 13-4 major decision over Kayle Bearson from North Central (Ill.) College. Herrema then defeated Brendan Connolly from UChicago, 13-7. Connolly entered the match ranked sixth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Region 6 poll.
Combined with these two wins, a 3-0 record at the Heidelberg Holiday Duals and a first-place finish at the Ohio Northern Polar Bear Invitational, Herrema moved up to the No. 1 spot in the NWCA Region 6 rankings. For the entire season, he has a 19-3 record and currently riding an 11-match win streak. Herrema has scored bonus points in 15 wins (one forfeit, four pins, three technical falls and seven major decisions).
Herrema and the Comets travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the NWCA Muti-Division National Dual Meet Championships on Friday and Saturday, January 10-11 at the UNI-Dome.
