Wrestling: King and Phelps end season at NCAA Division III Championships
LA CROSSE, Wis. – Seniors Donovan King and Dylan Phelps represented the University of Olivet wrestling team at day one of the 2024 NCAA Championships at the La Crosse Center. King won his first match before bowing out with back-to-back losses. Phelps suffered two close losses.
In his first match, King defeated Peter Wersinger from The College of New Jersey, 4-1. After a scoreless first period, Wersinger went down to start the second period. He escaped with 47 seconds left before King scored a takedown in the waning seconds of the period. King then earned the escape point to begin the third period to hang for the 4-1 win. In the quarterfinals, King fell to Tyler Kim from Augsburg (Minn.) University, 4-0. Dropping to the consolation bracket, King dropped a 5-1 decision to Walter West from Luther (Iowa) College.
Phelps fell to Alex Samson from St. John Fisher (N.Y.) College, 7-4, in his first match. A first-period takedown for Samson was the difference in the match. In his first consolation bracket match, Phelps lost 8-6 to Ethan Pogorzelski from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Pogorzelski scored a takedown in the first and second periods, while Phelps managed just three escape points to account for the difference in the match.
