Wrestling: Eckman wins 285-pound title, Olivet places third at Mid-States Invitational

ANGOLA, Ind. – Led by junior Boe Eckman's championship in the 285-pound bracket, The University of Olivet wrestling team totaled 117 points to finish third at the 2024 Mid-States Invitational.
- The field was comprised of 11 NCAA Division III schools from the Midwest.
- Twelve of the 21 Olivet wrestlers who competed in the tournament finished in the top eight of his weight class.
- Junior Boe Eckman posted a 5-0 record to win the 285-pound title.
- Of the remaining top-eight finishers, one took third, two were fourth and one was fifth.
- Eckman had four pins totaling five minutes and 35 seconds. In the championship match, he pinned two-time NCAA All-American Doug Byrne from Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University in 19 seconds.
- Sophomore Darren McLeod had a 4-1 record to finish third in the 149-pound bracket. Three of his wins were 15-0 technical falls.
- Junior Jay Shaull placed fourth at 165 pounds. His wins were one pin, one technical fall and two major decisions.
- Freshman Juwan Vines was fourth at 184 pounds. After losing his first match, he bounced back to win the next three before losing 6-5 in the third-place match.
- Junior Kody Krupp had a 4-2 record for a fifth-place finish at 197 pounds. He scored bonus points in each of his wins – two major decisions, one pin and one technical fall.
- 125: Sam Schreiber – 2-3 record – 8th-place – lost 17-0 technical fall to Andrew Punzalan (Wabash), pinned Mason Jones (Manchester) in 3:49, pinned Tyler Demory (Alma) in 1:51, pinned by Max Mader (Adrian) in 5:40, lost 13-5 major decision to Jordan Miller (Mount St. Joseph).
- 133: Emilio Cabrera – 2-2 record – 7th-place – lost 9-6 to Alejandro Velasco (Wabash), pinned Cole Renier (Heidelberg) in 5:55, lost 17-2 technical fall to Ashtyn Bennett (Adrian), won 10-0 major decision over Ben Edwards (Trine).
- 141: Robert Davids – 1-2 record – lost 15-6 major decision to Jorden Zigo (Mount St. Joseph), pinned Brady Packer (Adrian) in 1:44, lost 8-5 decision to Drew Miller (Heidelberg).
- 141: David Schulte – 2-2 record – won 18-2 technical fall over Brady Packer (Adrian), lost 9-6 to Garson Matney (Wabash), won 14-5 major decision over Aidan Kelly (Baldwin Wallace), pinned by Gabe Hansen (Ohio Northern) in 2:16.

- Olivet competes at the 2024 NCAA Division III Central Regional Friday and Saturday, March 1-2, at Ohio Northern University. The top three finishers in each of the 10 weight classes will advance to the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships Friday and Saturday, March 15-16, at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
