Wrestling: Gurrero wins 157-pound title at Trine Invitational

ANGOLA, Ind. – Led by junior Ramiro Guerrero, The University of Olivet wrestling team participated the Trine (Ind.) University Invitational, held today at the Athletic and Recreation Center. The invitational was unscored and the top six finishers earned a spot on the podium.
- Guerrero took first-place in the 157-pound bracket.
- Juniors Robert Davids and Tyler Herrema finished third at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.
- Placing fifth were junior Emmett Kettel at 125 pounds, senior Mitchell Reynolds at 174 pounds and sophomore Gideon Loewen at 184 pounds.
- Taking sixth were senior Dylan Phelps at 141 pounds and junior Jay Shaull at 157 pounds.
- Guerrero posted a 4-0 record. He started the day with a 10-4 win, followed that with a 17-0 technical fall and 11-7 decision in the semifinals. In the championship match, Guerrero defeated Emmanuel Scordos from Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University, 8-6. The difference in the match was a takedown in the first period.
- After losing his first match, 9-5, Davids won three straight matches in the consolation bracket (15-0, pin in 2:08 and 10-1). He claimed a medical forfeit win in the consolation bracket semis. In the third-place match, Davids revenged his opening round loss by defeating Michael Tharpe from Indiana Tech, 13-1. In the match, he had three takedowns and a three-point nearfall.
- Herrema eked out a 12-9 decision in the first round before getting pinned in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, he had two pins and an 11-2 major decision. In the third-place match, Herrema bested Chase Pluhar from Indiana Tech, 10-6.
- Kettell had a 4-2 record. His wins were a 19-3 technical fall, 14-0 and 12-3 major decisions and 12-7 decision.
- Reynolds won his first two matches, 14-3 and 16-0, before dropping a 4-1 overtime decision in the semifinals. Reynolds pinned his first opponent in the consolation bracket but lost the consolation bracket semifinal match. He did not have to wrestle the fifth-place match since his opponent had wrestled his maximum matches for the day.
- Loewen edged his first opponent, 5-2, in sudden death before losing 12-4 in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, he won by fall with eight seconds left in the third period before dropping a 9-4 decision. Loewen earned a medical forfeit victory in the fifth-place match.
- Olivet hosts the annual Comet Duals next Saturday, November 18.
