ROANOKE, Va. – Olivet College junior Donovan King posted a 4-2 record to place at the 2023 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship today at the Berglund Center. The performance helped him earn All-American honors for the second straight year.
As the No. 3 seed, King was pinned by No. 3 seed Kaleb Reeves from Coe (Iowa) College in the semifinals. Dropping into the consolation bracket semifinals, King was pinned by Darryl Aiello from University of Dubuque (Iowa). In the fifth-place match, King defeated Jake Peavy from University of Southern Maine, 9-2. King scored a takedown and a pair of two-point near-falls in the first period. Peavy got a reversal late in the opening period. There was no scoring in the second period. Peavy chose to go on top to start the third period, but King earned a reversal and added the riding time point at the end for the 9-2 final score.
"Finishing fifth wasn't the result we wanted but it's what we earned," said Olivet head coach Brandon Brissette. "You can't take being an All-American for granted, and Donovan showed his poise and character winning his last match. We are proud of him, the season he put together, and already look toward his senior season."
The championship caps a stellar 2022-23 season for King. He earned All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) honors and was named the MIAA Most Valuable Wrestler. King earns the 26th NCAA All-American award in school history. He is the eighth two-time All-American and the first James Myers was sixth in 2011 and 2012.
