ROANOKE, Va. – Olivet College junior Donovan King posted a 3-0 record to secure All-American honors at the 2023 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship today at the Berglund Center. Two of his wins were first-period pins and the third was a minor decision win.
As the No. 2 seed, King was drawn into a rat-tail match to start the championships. He wasted no time in the match, as he pinned Nate DeGroff from Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) in 1:05. In the first-round match, King defeated Brandon Williams from Greensboro (N.C.) College, 6-3. Williams led 1-0 to start the third period. King scored a takedown 17 seconds into the final period. Williams earned a reversal before King escaped six seconds later and picked-up the riding time point at the end of the match.
In the quarterfinal match, King wrestled No. 7 seed Evan Anderson from New York University. King used a takedown and quick tilt to pin Anderson at 1:38.
King now faces Kaleb Reeves from Coe (Iowa) College tomorrow morning in the semifinals. A year ago, King pinned Reeves in the quarterfinals of the 2022 NCAA DIII Championship. They also faced each other earlier this year on January 7 at the NWCA Multi-Division National Duals. King also pinned Reeves in that match in the first period at 2:12. Those two losses are Reeves' only two losses over the last two seasons.
