Kettell and Herrema win titles to lead wrestling team at MIAA Individual Championships
ADRIAN, Mich. – Ten members of the Olivet College wrestling team finished in the top four of their weight class at the 2023 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Individual Championships, hosted by Adrian College and at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center.

ADRIAN, Mich. – Ten members of the Olivet College wrestling team finished in the top four of their weight class at the 2023 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Individual Championships, hosted by Adrian College and at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center.
- Sophomores Emmett Kettel and Tyler Herrema captured the 125- and 149-pound titles, respectively.
- The other finishes were five runner-up performances, one third-place and two fourth-place finishes.
- In a battle of teammates for the 125-pound title, Kettel won a 5-4 overtime decision over freshman Isaiah Mullins. To reach the championship match, Kettel had two pins (3:59 and 1:27), while Mullins had a 16-0 technical fall and 8-1 decision victory.
- At 133 pounds, sophomore Stuart Donlan placed second. He won his first two matches by decision (12-8 and 8-3) before suffering a 3-0 loss in the championship match.
- At 141 pounds, sophomore Robert Davids finished third.
- Three Comets finished in the top four at 149 pounds, with Herrema earning first-place, followed by sophomore Jay Shaull in second and freshman Darren McLeod in fourth. Herrema won 8-0 and 9-2 before earning a medical forfeit win over Shaull in the championship match. Shaull pinned his first opponent and then won 13-10 and 10-4 decisions. McLeod's two losses were to the same wrestler in the first round and then in the third-place match. His two wins were a pin and 6-5 decision.
- At 197 pounds, senior Hiram Robinson posted a runner-up finish. He won his first match by pin and then edged his opponent, 3-2, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Robinson was pinned.
- At 285 pounds, junior Donovan King placed second. He pinned his first-round opponent in the first period and then won a wild 28-13 technical fall in the semifinals. King medically forfeited the championship match.
- Also, at 285 pounds, sophomore Boe Eckman was fourth with a 2-2 record. His two wins were first-period pins at 1:44 and 59 seconds.
- Olivet hosts the Mid-States Invitational next Saturday, February 11. Action from the Cutler Event Center gets started at 9 a.m.
