HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Olivet College junior Donovan King has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week for wrestling. He is being recognized with this honor for the second time this season.
The No. 1-ranked wrestler at 285 pounds, King posted a 4-0 record last week. He started the week by posting a 16-0 technical fall win over Joe Maier from Alma College in the Comets' MIAA-opening dual match. King then had a 3-0 record, with three pins at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships. He pinned Shea Garanda from Castleton (Vt.) University 29 seconds into the second period, Kaleb Reeves from Coe (Iowa) College 48 seconds left in the first period and William Longhurst from Averett (Va.) University 55 seconds into the match. Reeves is a returning NCAA All-American after placing third at the 2022 NCAA Championships.
"Donovan has really brought a focused intensity to his wrestling this year," said Olivet head coach Brandon Brissette. "He was excited for the rematch from nationals with the wrestler from Coe and you could see that in how he wrestled that match as well as his other two matches. Donovan has shown that last year's run at nationals was no fluke but just the beginning of his time to shine. The team will also continue to look at him for emotional leadership going into the meat of the conference season."
King and the Comets return to the mat Thursday when they host Trine (Ind.) University at 7 p.m.
