Wrestling team wins two matches at MCC Stenberg Duals
MUSKEGON, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team opened the 2022-23 season by winning two matches tonight at the Muskegon Community College (MCC) Stenberg Duals. The Comets defeated the host Jayhawks, 23-21, before beating the Grand Valley State University club team, 37-15.

MUSKEGON, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team opened the 2022-23 season by winning two matches tonight at the Muskegon Community College (MCC) Stenberg Duals. The Comets defeated the host Jayhawks, 23-21, before beating the Grand Valley State University club team, 37-15.

- The outcome of the match came down to the final bout when freshman Luke Cortez won 7-2 at 285 pounds.
- Freshman Isaiah Mullins got the match started with a 9-0 major decision at 125 pounds.
- The Jayhawks went ahead 5-4 by virtue of a technical fall at 133 pounds.
- The Comets won the next four bouts to go up 20-5. Sophomore David Schulte started the run with forfeit win at 141 pounds.
- Sophomore Tyler Herrema posted a 7-2 decision at 149 pounds.
- Freshman Jacob Kasner scored a takedown in the third period to hang on for a 6-5 win at 157 pounds.
- Junior Mitchell Reynolds shutout his opponent, 11-0, at 165 pounds.
- Muskegon scored bonus point wins at 174, 184 and 197 pounds to take a 21-20 lead.
- Cortez used a takedown in the first period, a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third period to pull away for a 7-2 win and give the team win to the Comets.
- Three forfeit wins for the Comets in the first three bouts propelled them to an 18-0 lead.
- Herrema won 11-0 at 149 pounds to make the score 22-0.
- Kasner claimed a 7-1 win at 157 pounds and Reynolds won by forfeit at 165 pounds to stretch Olivet's lead to 31-0.
- The Lakers earned pins at the next two weights to close their gap to 31-12.
- Sophomore Zakary Foster capped Olivet's win with a first period pin at 1:10.
- The Comets split their squad tomorrow. Some wrestlers will return to MCC for the Ben McMullen Open and other wrestlers will compete at the Michigan State University Open. Action gets started at 9:30 a.m. at both locations.
