Wrestling team splits four dual matches record at Comet Duals

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team hosted 10 other schools for the 2021 Comet Duals at The Cutler Event Center. The Comet varsity team split four dual matches, as it defeated Grand Valley State University, 23-22, and University of Mount Union (Ohio), 32-16, but fell to Ohio Northern University, 31-12, and Millkin (Ill.) University, 31-11. The Olivet “B” team split two matches against in-state junior colleges, defeating St. Clair County Community College (34-16) and losing to Muskegon Community College (33-16).

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team hosted 10 other schools for the 2021 Comet Duals at The Cutler Event Center. The Comet varsity team split four dual matches, as it defeated Grand Valley State University, 23-22, and University of Mount Union (Ohio), 32-16, but fell to Ohio Northern University, 31-12, and Millkin (Ill.) University, 31-11. The Olivet "B" team split two matches against in-state junior colleges, defeating St. Clair County Community College (34-16) and losing to Muskegon Community College (33-16).

  • The Comets won six of the 10 bouts, but the outcome was not decided until the conclusion of the last one.
  • The Lakers used a forfeit to go ahead 6-0 at the start of the match.
  • Olivet won the next five bouts to go ahead 19-6.
  • Picking-up wins were sophomore Spencer Murphy, 6-2 at 133 pounds; freshman Jay Shaull, 10-0 at 141 pounds; sophomore Christian Lenon, 20-5 at 149 pounds; freshman Ramiro Guerrero, 17-4 at 157 pounds; and junior Zach Potter, 9-4 at 165 pounds.
  • Grand Valley used a technical fall at 174 pounds and back-to-back pins at 184 and 197 pounds, to go ahead 23-19.
  • Senior Dominick Wilson stepped onto the mat 285 pounds and ended the match in Olivet's favor with a pin two minutes and 13 seconds into the bout.

  • Olivet won just two bouts against the Polar Bears.
  • At 149 pounds, senior Hunter Murphy pinned his man just 1:03 into the bout.
  • At 285 pounds, sophomore Donovan King recorded a pin at 1:21.

  • The Comets earned wins in six bouts, earning bonus points in five.
  • The Purple Raiders claimed victories in the first two points for a 10-0 lead.
  • Senior Reese Wallis and Hunter Murphy had back-to-back pins at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively, to put Olivet ahead 12-10.
  • Guerrero came-from-behind for a 14-9 decision victory at 157 pounds to increase the Comets' lead to 15-10.
  • Mount Union won a narrow 6-5 decision at 165 pounds.
  • At 174 pounds, junior Owen Guilford posted a 15-0 technical fall to make the score 22-13.
  • A forfeit victory for freshman Kody Krupp at 184 pounds sealed Olivet's win.
  • King capped the team's victory with a thrilling first-period pin at 285 pounds.

  • Olivet had two wins against Millkin.
  • Hunter Murphy recorded a 16-1 technical fall at 149 pounds.
  • Guilford pinned his opponent 1:14 into the second period of the 174-pound bout.

  • The Comets are off until Saturday, December 4, when they compete at the Ohio Northern Polar Bear Invitational in Ada, Ohio.
