Seven champions lead wrestling team at MIAA Individual Championships
OLIVET, Mich. – Seven Olivet College wrestlers won their respective weight class at the 2021 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Individual Championships, hosted by the Comets today inside the Cutler Event Center. In addition, four more Olivet wrestlers were finalists and finished second in their weight class. The 11 total finalists and seven champions were the most for one MIAA school. The seven champions will represent Olivet on the 2021 All-MIAA teams.

OLIVET, Mich. – Seven Olivet College wrestlers won their respective weight class at the 2021 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Individual Championships, hosted by the Comets today inside the Cutler Event Center. In addition, four more Olivet wrestlers were finalists and finished second in their weight class. The 11 total finalists and seven champions were the most for one MIAA school. The seven champions will represent Olivet on the 2021 All-MIAA teams.
- At 125 pounds, senior Cameron Mahlich had a pin and 18-1 technical fall in pool play before beating Chase Beecher from Alma, 3-1, in the championship match. Mahlich scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the third period for the win.
- At 133 pounds, junior Reese Wallis won three bonus point matches – 17-0 technical fall, 16-1 technical fall and 12-0 major decision in pool play. In the championship bout, Wallis beat Austin Wieczorek from Alma, 6-4, in overtime. Wallis got a takedown in the final second of the third period to second the bout to overtime, and then another takedown in the last second of overtime for the win.
- At 141 pounds, freshman Dylan Phelps won 18-3 and 12-4 in pool play. In the championship match, he defeated Matt Tomsett from Alma, 9-5.
- At 149 pounds, junior Hunter Murphy had three bonus point wins – 17-1 technical fall, 36-second pin and 17-4 major decision – in pool play. In the championship bout, he pinned Noah Nieman from Adrian in one minute and 23 seconds.
- At 157 pounds, freshman Gabe Guerrero placed second. He had nearly identical pin times, 2:26 and 2:28, and 7-6 decision in pool play. He lost the championship match to Jayce Kuehnlein from Alma.
- At 165 pounds, freshman Mitchell Reynolds posted a 2-1 record. His wins were a pin (3:49) and technical fall (23-7).
- At 174 pounds, sophomore Owen Guilford was awarded the default championships. He and teammate Zach Wells had 3-0 records in pool play. Guilford's wins were pin (3:53), minor decision (8-2) and major decision (14-1). Wells' wins were major decision (22-12), minor decision (8-1) and pin (1:57).
- At 184 pounds, senior Adam Hall placed second with a 3-1 record. He won 3-1, 16-6 and 9-1 in pool play before suffering a 4-1 loss to Michael Jacobs from Adrian in the championship match.
- At 197 pounds, senior Trevor Piggott had a 4-0 record. In pool play, he won twice by major decision (10-2 and 14-4) and pinned his man in the third match. In the championship bout, he defeated Donald Moses II from Adrian, 2-0. Piggott scored the escape point to start the second period and then earned the riding time point at the end of the match.
- At 285 pounds, sophomore Dominick Wilson was given the default win. He and teammate Donovan King had matching 3-0 records in pool play. Wilson's wins were 2-0, 4-0 and pin (1:32). The 2-0 victory was over Isaiah Espinosa from Adrian, who is No. 4 in the most recent NWCA rankings. King recorded three pins in 42 seconds, 15 seconds and 3:43.
- Olivet is back in action next Sunday, February 7, when it hosts Augsburg (Minn.) University, Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University and Alma College for a quad meet.
