Miller’s championship leads wrestling team at Trine Invitational
Sophomore Owen Miller won the 285-pound championship to lead the Olivet College wrestling team at the Trine (Ind.) University Invitational today inside the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center in Angola, Indiana.

ANGOLA, Ind. – Sophomore Owen Miller won the 285-pound championship to lead the Olivet College wrestling team at the Trine (Ind.) University Invitational today inside the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center in Angola, Indiana.
- There were no team scores, as schools were allowed unlimited entries at each weight class.
- The tournament included 14 other schools, with the breakdown being nine NCAA Division III schools, two junior colleges, two NAIA schools and one club program.
- The Comets had the third-most wrestlers competing with 23. Indiana Tech had the most with 30, followed by John Carroll (Ohio) University with 26.
- In addition to Miller's title, Olivet had two runner-up finishes, and two third-, one fourth-, one fifth- and two sixth-place performances.
- Miller posted a 5-0 record to win the 285-pound championship. He started the day with a first-period pin and followed that with three decision victories, 5-1, 3-1 and 5-1. In the championship bout against Cameron Sauerwein from Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University, Miller won a 16-8 major decision.
- Junior Dylan Briggs placed second with a 3-1 record in the 165-pound bracket. After getting a bye in the opening round, he won 7-0, had a first-period pin and won 6-3. In the championship match, Briggs fell to Sam Gross from John Carroll, 6-4. The difference in the match was a takedown by Gross in the closing seconds of the second period.
- Senior Nicholas Worden had a 4-1 record to finish second in the 174-pound bracket. His four wins were minor decisions, including the riding time point being the deciding factor in a 2-1 quarterfinal win. Worden lost 11-5 in the championship bout to Scott Sopko from Indiana Tech.
- Freshman Owen Guilford at 174 pounds and senior Jalen McFerrin-Pace at 197 pounds finished in third-place. Guilford had a 4-1 record, with two pins, one technical fall and one major decision. After dropping his first match, McFerrin-Pace won five straight matches. The first four were minor decisions before pinning his opponent in the third-place bout.
- With a 4-2 record, sophomore Liam Kinjorski was fourth at 157 pounds. Three of the victories were falls and the fourth was an 18-9 major decision.
- Sophomore Austin Engle placed fifth in the 197-pound bracket. He won two wins by fall and one by major decision before getting pinned in the semifinals. Engle lost his first consolation bracket bout but bounced back to win 14-1 in the fifth-place bout.
- Turning in a sixth-place performance was senior Andre Bourlier at 141 pounds. He split his six matches; however, he had a pin, technical fall and major decision for his three wins.
- Also finishing in sixth-place was freshman Jerry Hall at 165 pounds. He won his first two matches, and lost his third match before medically forfeiting his last two matches.
- Olivet hosts the 2019 Comet Duals next Saturday, Nov. 23. Action gets under way at 11 a.m. Olivet wrestles Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University, Millikin (Ill.) University, Ohio Northern University and Heidelberg (Ohio) University. The complete schedule for the duals can be found here.
