Women’s lacrosse team opens home slate with 12-8 win over Trine
Sophomore Taylor Guarnaccia scored a game-high six goals to lead the Olivet College women’s lacrosse team to a 12-8 win over Trine (Ind.) University in its home-opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Sophomore Taylor Guarnaccia (East Lansing/Haslett) scored a game-high six goals to lead the Olivet College women's lacrosse team to a 12-8 win over Trine (Ind.) University in its home-opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Guarnaccia scored the first goal less than two minutes into the game. Sophomore Geri Merrell (Battle Creek/Lakeview) added a goal before Guarnaccia scored her second goal to make the score 3-0. The Thunder dented the scoreboard for the first time with 21:58 left in the opening half. The Comets scored the final six goals of the first half to take a 9-1 lead at the break. Trine out-scored Olivet, 7-3, in the second half, for the final margin.
In addition to her six goals, Guarnaccia recorded a team-leading 10 shots, picked-up five groundballs, won three draw controls and caused two turnovers. Merrell chipped-in with four goals on seven shots and picked-up a team-leading six draw controls.
Sophomore Mimi Garza (Battle Creek/Pennfield) contributed two goals and one assist, while topping the team with nine groundballs. Sophomore Sarah Shaw (Grand Haven) played all 60 minutes in the cage and made 10 saves off 26 Trine shots.
The Comets are back in action next Saturday when they play a 1 p.m. game at Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University.
