The Olivet College women's golf team took first-place at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Playoff Round #3, which was played on the Comets' home course, The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall.
Olivet posted a 331 team score and were three strokes ahead of Saint Mary's (Ind.) College. The three strokes were not enough to overcome the Belles, who earn the league's automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championships May 13-16 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Comets will now have to wait until next Monday, May 3, to see if the NCAA chooses them to receive one of three at-large bids to the national championships.
Following Olivet and Saint Mary's in today's round was Hope at 344; Albion at 366; Trine at 374; Kalamazoo at 398; and Adrian at 445. Olivet senior Lindsay Pipkin (White Lake/Lakeland) along with Hope's Cassie Sneller each shot an 80 to be co-medalists.
Sophomore Amber Conrad (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) was one stroke behind Pipkin with an 81. For the second consecutive day, junior Megan Rimmel (Ithaca) tied for seventh-place in the player standings with an 84. Junior Katie Misko (Alma) needed 86 strokes to complete her round. Freshman Lauren Campbell (Fenton) carded an 87. Sophomore Abby Wheeler (Grayling) had the second-best individual score, as she shot an 87.
The NCAA will announce the field for the national championships by 8 p.m. next Monday. The announcement will be posted on the NCAA Web site at www.ncaa.com.
