Women’s basketball team beats Alma, 63-51
The Olivet College women’s basketball team scored the first 13 points of the game en route to a 63-51 win over Alma College this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team scored the first 13 points of the game en route to a 63-51 win over Alma College this evening at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
The Comets' first 13 points came on two 3-pointers by sophomore Kelsey Campbell (Olivet), two layups by junior Brittany Brown (Inkster/John Glenn) and a free throw by junior SoQuitta DeShazor (Flint/Hamady). The Scots scored the next six points to trim their deficit down to seven points, 13-7. Campbell answered the run with another 3-pointer to put Olivet back up double digits.
The Comets' lead stayed more than 10 points for the rest of the game. Their biggest lead of the first half was 23 points, 44-21, after junior Mellissa Bageris (Milford) made a 3-pointer. In the first 20 minutes, Olivet shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31) to 244.3 percent (9-of-37) for Alma. The closest the Scots would get in the second half was 11 points on three occasions.
For the game, Olivet made 25-of-58 baskets (43.1 percent), while Alma made 20-of-65 (30.8 percent). The Comets also nailed seven 3-pointers, and the Scots had five. Both teams canned six foul shots.
Campbell was one-of-three Olivet players to score in double figures, as she made 4-of-5 baskets, including 3-of-3 shooting from behind the arc a, 2-of-2 foul shots for a team-leading 13 points. Brittany was next with 12 points, and Bageris added 11. DeShazor and sophomore Rachael Wagner (Clinton Twp./Fraser) each grabbed six rebounds.
Mallory Pruett scored 18 points to lead Alma. Danielle Hicks finished with a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Comets will wrap-up their season Saturday when they travel to play Albion College at 3 p.m.
