Women’s basketball team falls to Alma, 61-57, in regular season finale
The women's basketball team rallied from a 20-point deficit to tie the game, but it was not enough as Alma held off the Comets, 61-57.
ALMA, Mich. -- The Olivet College women's basketball team rallied from a 20-point deficit to tie the game, but it was not enough as Alma College held off the Comets, 61-57, today at the Art Smith Arena in Alma.
The Scots had their 20-point lead, 32-12, with 5:26 left before halftime. Olivet battled back with a 24-14 to make the score 36-26, and Alma got a basket with seven seconds left to take a 38-28 lead into the locker rooms.
In the second half, Alma regained a 17-point lead, 51-34. The Comets used a 20-3 run, capped by a three-pointer by freshman Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) to tie the game at 54-54. The Scots grabbed the lead back, 59-54, with a layup and triple. Olivet would get no closer than two points with 19 seconds left.
Junior Debbie Nikodemski (Rockford) and senior Caitlin Thilo (Onondaga/Eaton Rapids) each scored 11 points. Sophomore Kati Stickney (Union City) added 10 points, while junior Alysia Cole (Roseville) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
For Alma, Anna Mattson led all scorers with 14 points. Bailey Gooding contributed 10 points.
The Comets are the fifth seed in next week's MIAA Tournament, and will travel to play fourth seed Albion College Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
