Women’s basketball team comes up short against Kalamazoo, 56-49
The women’s basketball team had a valiant come back fall short, as Kalamazoo held on to beat the Comets, 56-49.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Olivet College women's basketball team had a valiant come back fall short, as Kalamazoo College held on to beat the Comets, 56-49, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) today inside the Anderson Athletic Center in Kalamazoo.
The Hornets built a 17-point halftime lead, 36-19, behind 50 percent shooting from the floor and 11-of-12 shooting from the charity stripe. The Comets slowly chipped away at their deficit during the second half and took a 49-48 lead with 3:13 in the game. Kalamazoo scored the final eight points of the game for the 56-49 win.
Junior Debbie Nikodemski (Rockford) scored a career-high 22 points, making 8-of-11 baskets and perfect 6-of-6 free throws. She also blocked six shots. Junior Alysia Cole (Roseville) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Kalamazoo used a balanced scoring attack in the victory, led by Nicole Antoine's 14 points. Holly Cooperrider added nine points, while Courtney Kaplan had eight. Cooperrider was team's leading rebounder with seven.
Olivet will play its final two regular season games next week. On Wednesday, the Comets host Hope College at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday, they travel to play Alma College at 3 p.m.
