Smith earns national academic honor
Olivet College senior Stephanie Smith (Waldron/Camden Frontier) has been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division second-team in women’s basketball.
OLIVET, Mich. -- Olivet College senior Stephanie Smith (Waldron/Camden Frontier) has been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division second-team in women's basketball. Smith advanced to the national ballot after earning first-team Academic All-District IV honors.
Smith, who has a 4.0 grade point average in environmental science and biology, started every game this season for the Comets. She was second on the team in scoring (11.3 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (4.0 rpg). Smith was first on the team and in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) in three-pointers made (62). Along with being Olivet's all-time leader in three-pointers made (201) and attempted (589), she ranks eighth all-time in scoring with 842 points
Smith is the seventh student-athlete in school history and the sixth in the last five years to earn Academic All-America honors.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program recognizes student-athletes who have succeeded on the field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected by votes from the members of College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible, the student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.0.
