The women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Adrian College, 74-73, this afternoon at the Merilatt Center in Adrian.
The Lady Comets (7-12, 2-9 MIAA) took a five-point lead, 22-17, the 10:24 mark of the first half when sophomore Cassie Monette (Holt) nailed two free throws. The Bulldogs (6-12, 3-8 MIAA) battled back to tie the game, 29-29. Olivet closed the half with a 17-9 run for a 46-38 halftime lead.
Adrian quickly erased the deficit and took a 48-47 lead in the first four minutes, 19 seconds of the second half. The Comets answered and led by as many as six points twice, including 71-65 with 4:23 remaining. The Bulldogs slowly trimmed their deficit and won the game on two free throws with 0.4 seconds left.
Sophomore Stephanie Smith (Camden/Waldron Frontier) had 17 points with five three-pointers for Olivet. Junior Kari Searles (Marshall) was the only player in double figures with 16 points. She also had a team-high six assists.
Corri Helldobler had a double-double of 20 points and 10 assists to lead Adrian. Kate Psuate chipped in with 16 while Jessica Borowiak came off the bench to score 14 points.
The Comets are idle until next Saturday, Feb. 5, when they host Alma College at the Upton Center in Olivet. The game is a part of a men's/women's basketball doubleheader. The men's team will tip-off against Alma at 1 p.m., followed the women's game at approximately 3 p.m.
