OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet softball team was swept by Kalamazoo College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, 5-3 and 8-0, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.
THE BASICS
- Final Scores: Kalamazoo 5, Olivet 3; Kalamazoo 8, Olivet 0 (5)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Hornets scored three runs in the top half of the first inning. The Comets countered with a run in the home half of the first. Sophomore Haylie Wenke reached base on a leadoff single, followed by an infield single by sophomore Zola Smith. On the single, Wenke went to third base. Olivet then used a double steal to score Wenke.
- Kalamazoo plated two runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Comets manufactured a run in the fourth inning. Freshman Alisha Gahn hit a leadoff single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Avery Lowell and came around to score on junior Shaelyn Lampinen's single. Olivet left two runners stranded in the inning.
- The Comets did not go down quietly in the seventh inning. Wenke scored on sacrifice fly by sophomore Alexis Bond. Senior Mattie Akom hit an infield single, bringing the tying run to the plate. A groundout ended the game.
- At the plate, Olivet matched Kalamazoo with nine hits. From the leadoff spot in the lineup, Wenke was 3-for-4 and stole three bases. Akom and Gahn each had two hits. Freshman Cayla Konop was the losing pitcher.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Hornets pushed across two runs in the first and second innings, three runs in the third and one run in the fifth to post the 8-0 mercy-rule victory. The Comets were limited three hits, singles by Bond, Lampinen and Lowell. Gahn started in the circle, and gave up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits over two innings. Senior Briana Gitchell threw two scoreless innings.
