Softball team defeated by Calvin, 10-1 and 10-2

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team suffered a pair of run-rule losses to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Calvin University, 10-1 and 10-2, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

- The Knights scored three runs in the top of first inning.
- Olivet scored its lone run in the home of the first inning. Junior Erin Brady led off with an infield single and went to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Freshman Meredith Morell advanced Brady to third with a single before sophomore Katie Lenz hit a sacrifice fly to score Brady.
- Calvin broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning and capped its scoring with a single tally in the fifth inning.
- Olivet was held to three hits – all in the first inning by Brady, Morell and senior Amber Trudeau.
- Lenz was credited with the pitching loss, yielding all 10 runs (six earned) on 13 hits over the five innings. She struck out three batters.
- Seven of the nine Calvin starters recorded at least one hit, with five posting a multi-hit game.
- From the leadoff spot in the lineup, Sydney Duong went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Hannah Biddlecome, Kennedi Pepin, Taylor Sanborn and Lily Gaastra each registered two hits.
- Abbi Warner drove in a team-best two runs.
- Kristen Krause earned the pitching win.
- The Knights pushed across two runs in the first inning, five runs in the second and three runs in the third for an 8-0 lead.
- Olivet got one back in the fourth inning. Lenz led off with a single and Trudeau walked to put two runners on base. Freshman Summer Smith's sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. Freshman Malaya Shireman ripped a single up the middle to score Lenz.
- The Comets scored another run in the top of fifth when Brady hit a solo home run.
- Calvin ended the game with two runs in the last half of the fifth.
- Olivet had four hits, including two for Brady.
- The other two were by Lenz and Shireman.
- Shireman was tagged with the pitching loss, as she gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits over four and two-thirds innings.
- Doung was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
- Biddlecome also had three hits, while scoring twice and driving in two.
- Sage Mougin tallied two hits and two runs.
- Maddy Meredith picked-up the win in the circle, as she allowed both runs on four hits over five innings. She struck out five and walked three.
- The Comets travel down I-69 tomorrow to play Trine (Ind.) University for a doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m.
