Softball team loses two home games to Saint Mary’s, 12-0 and 12-1
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College, 12-0 and 12-1, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Saint Mary's (Ind.) College, 12-0 and 12-1, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

- In the top of the first, the first nine Saint Mary's batters reached base safely and seven of them came around to score.
- The Belles added one more run in the second, three runs in the fourth and capped their scoring with a run in the fifth to invoke the eight-run mercy rule ending.
- Olivet finished the game with six hits.
- Sophomores Brielle Broderick and Katie Lenz both went 2-for-3.
- Freshman Meredith Morell and sophomore Emily Keeler also had a base hit.
- Freshman Malaya Shireman was charged with the pitching loss, as she allowed all the first inning runs.
- Keeler threw five innings in relief and gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits. She struck out three.
- The Belles recorded 13 hits, with 10 singles and three doubles.
- McKenna Myers, Mandi Hettinger and Alexis Rauch each tallied two hits.
- Rauch drove in a team-best three runs.
- Myers and Shelby Dellasandro collected two RBI apiece.
- Hettinger scored a team-high three runs.
- Hettinger picked-up the pitching win, as she scattered four hits over the first three innings.
- Grace Renschen tossed the final two innings.
- The second game started like the first game, as the Belles sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs in the first inning.
- Olivet used a two-out rally to score its lone run in the third inning. Morell and Broderick hit back-to-back singles before Lenz ripped a single to center field to score Morell.
- In the bottom of fourth inning, Saint Mary's pushed across seven runs to make the score 12-1.
- Olivet registered five hits, including two for Lenz.
- Broderick was on base twice, with a single and a walk.
- The other two hits were by Morell and senior Amber Trudeau.
- In the circle, Lenz suffered the loss after yielding 12 runs (three earned) on nine hits over three and two-thirds innings.
- Shireman recorded the final out.
- The Belles notched 10 hits, with three doubles, one home run and six singles.
- Rauch was 2-for-4 with a grand slam home run and two runs scored.
- Also recording two hits were Hettinger, McKenna Shoupe and Libby Bierbaum.
- Bierbaum hit two doubles and drove in three runs.
- Hettinger's and Shoupe's hits were singles.
- Bierbaum was the winning pitcher. She allowed five hits, while striking out six over the five innings.
- The Comets travel to Hope College tomorrow for a rescheduled doubleheader. First pitch from game on is slated for 3 p.m.
