Softball team suffers two losses to Adrian in MIAA doubleheader

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team suffered a pair of losses, 12-0 and 6-3, to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Adrian College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

- The Bulldogs pushed across six runs in both the first and third innings to invoke the eight-run mercy rule ending.
- Olivet tallied three hits.
- Junior Kaylee Clothier was 2-for-2 with two singles.
- Sophomore Jessica Barnes was charged with the loss in the circle. She allowed all 12 runs (seven earned) on nine hits over the first two and one-third innings.
- Freshman Katie Lenz threw two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
- The Bulldogs finished the game with 12 hits, 11 singles and one double.
- Haley DeChalk was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
- Hope Kapelanski also had two hits.
- Kapelanski, Jamie Bell, Barbara Strahan and Jalyn DeForest each scored two runs.
- Natalie Mathers tossed the complete game, three-hitter to pick-up the win.
- Adrian raced out to a 6-0 lead behind single tallies in the first and second innings, three runs in the third and one final run in the fourth.
- The Comets got two runs back in the fifth inning. After a leadoff walk, followed by two hits loaded the bases, senior Paige Poulter and sophomore Lily Eagleton hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to score senior Kayla Blett and junior Karina Marin.
- Like the fifth inning, Olivet loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth. A groundout off Marin's bat plated sophomore Jessica Barnes with the Comets' only run, as two fly outs ended Olivet's scoring chances.
- The Comets brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning but failed to score any runs.
- Olivet out-hit Adrian, 8-7.
- Barnes went 2-for-2 after entering the game as a defensive replacement in the fifth inning.
- Six other players each had a hit.
- Freshman Sarah Shevenell pitched all six innings, and gave up six runs (three earned) on seven hits to be tagged with the loss.
- DeChalk and Strahan recorded two hits apiece.
- Kaitlyn Hawkins threw the first five innings, while allowing two runs on three hits over to be credited with the win.
- Emily Baldus pitched the final two innings, and surrendered one run on five hits.
- The Comets head to Adrian Friday for MIAA triangular. Olivet plays the host Bulldogs at 12 p.m., followed by a game against Kalamazoo College.
