Softball team swept by Huntington in home-opener
The Olivet College softball team was swept by Huntington (Ind.) University in its home-opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Foresters won by scores of 2-0 and 16-4.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team was swept by Huntington (Ind.) University in its home-opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Foresters won by scores of 2-0 and 16-4.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between Olivet's Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) and Huntington's Molly Long. The Foresters scored a run in the third inning and added an insurance run in the seventh inning. The Comets were held to two base runners and one hit from junior Alison Iuelle (Kentwood/Kelloggsville). Cook allowed just one earned run on four hits, while striking out three and walking one.
In the nightcap, the Foresters took a 5-0 lead behind three runs in the second inning and two runs in the third inning. Olivet cut its deficit to one run when it pushed across four runs in the bottom half of the third. Highlighting the inning was Iuelle's three-run home run. Huntington then closed the scoring with 11 unanswered runs, including seven in the seventh.
For the game, the Comets had six hits. Iuelle went 2-for-3 at the plate with one double, one home run, one run scored and three RBI. Junior Marlene Packer (Grand Rapids/Creston) also had two hits. The other two hits were a single by sophomore Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) and a RBI-single by junior Lindsey Maas (Pinckney).
In the circle, freshman Jessica Duell (Ionia) suffered the loss, as she gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in four innings. Fellow freshman Nicole McCoy (Detroit/Mumford) allowed just one earned run on seven hits in three innings.
Olivet will travel to play Bluffton (Ohio) University for a non-conference twinbill Saturday afternoon. First pitch for game one is 1 p.m.
