FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College softball team concluded its spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Classic today by dropping a pair of two-run decisions at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers. The Comets were shutout by Hendrix (Ark.) College, 2-0, in their first game, and then fell 4-2 to College of Wooster (Ohio) in their second game.
Hendrix scored the only two runs it would need in the third inning. Olivet managed to get only two runners in scoring position for the entire game. Overall, the Comets were held to two singles, one each by sophomore Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) and junior Ciara Santos (Lansing/Everett). In the circle, senior Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) gave up the two runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking no batters.
Against Wooster, Olivet jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top half of the first inning. Sophomore Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville) had a single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Santos. The Scots came back to take a 3-1 with three runs in their half of the first.
The Comets got one run back in the third inning. Junior Lindsey Maas (Pinckney) led off the inning with a double over the left fielder's head. She advanced to third when senior Christine Daub (Hudson) reached base on a bunt single right down the first base line. Nielsen then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Maas.
Wooster answered with an insurance run in the bottom half of the third. Olivet did not go down quietly in the seventh inning, as it brought the go-ahead run to the plate.
The Comets out-hit the Scots, 7-6. Santos led the way with a 2-for-3 performance, while five others each recorded a hit. Freshman Nicole McCoy (Detroit/Mumford) started in the circle, and gave up the four runs in three innings. Freshman Jessica Duell (Ionia) threw three scoreless innings of relief.
Olivet will resume its schedule Thursday afternoon when it hosts Huntington (Ind.) University for a non-conference doubleheader, beginning at 3 p.m.
