Softball team loses Thursday’s games in Florida
The Olivet College softball team lost both games today at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside the Cape Coral Sports Complex in Cape Coral, Fla. The Comets were shutout by Richard Stockton (N.J.) College, 8-0, in their first game and then fell 4-3 in nine innings to St. Lawrence (N.Y.) University in their second game.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College softball team lost both games today at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside the Cape Coral Sports Complex in Cape Coral, Fla. The Comets were shutout by Richard Stockton (N.J.) College, 8-0, in their first game and then fell 4-3 in nine innings to St. Lawrence (N.Y.) University in their second game.
In the first game, the Ospreys scored one run in the third, two runs in the fourth and ended the game by scoring five runs in the fifth inning. The Comets did not go down without a fight, as they left six base runners on base. In the fourth and fifth innings, Olivet left runners on second and third base.
In defeat, the Comets had only four hits. Senior catcher Christine Daub (Hudson) hit a double and recorded a sacrifice bunt in her other plate appearance. Also recording hits were senior shortstop Brooke Coshow (Niles/Brandywine), junior Ali Lund (Owosso) and sophomore Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville). Senior Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) was the losing pitcher, as she allowed all eight runs on nine hits.
In the second game, St. Lawrence jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run. Olivet came back to tie the game in the fourth inning when Daub laced a RBI-double to score sophomore Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic), who walked to lead off the inning.
The Comets took a 2-1 lead when they pushed across an unearned run in the sixth inning. The Saints forced extra innings with their own unearned run in the bottom half of the seventh. In the eighth, Olivet had runners on the corners with nobody out, but failed to score. St. Lawrence left a runner stranded on third in its half of the eighth. The Comets scored one run in the ninth on a RBI-single by Nielsen. The Saints plated two runs in the ninth to win the game.
For the game, the Comets were held to six hits, including three doubles. Daub had two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in a run. The other two extra base hits were by Coshow and junior Marlene Packer (Grand Rapids/Creston). Freshman Jessica Duell (Ionia) allowed just one earned run on seven hits, but was charged with the loss.
Olivet returns to the Cape Coral Complex tomorrow for games against SUNY Potsdam State and NYU-Polytechnic at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
