Softball team hits four home runs and wins twice at Gene Cusic Classic
The softball team hit four home runs, including two by Katelyn Boss and a grand slam home run by Terri Hurosky en route to a pair of wins this morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Cape Coral, Fla.
CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Olivet College softball team hit four home runs, including two by senior Katelyn Boss (Charlotte/Maple Valley) and a grand slam home run by freshman Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) en route to a pair of wins this morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Cape Coral, Fla. The Comets defeated Rockford (Ill.) College, 6-2, and Regis (Mass.) College, 11-0.
Olivet took advantage of two Rockford errors to score three runs, including two on a double by junior Brooke Coshow (Niles/Brandywine) in the first inning. The Comets added two more runs in the third on RBI-singles by sophomore Ali Lund (Owosso) and freshman Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville).
Boss capped the scoring with a pinch-hit solo home run to lead off the top half of the fourth inning. The Regents pushed across two unearned runs in the bottom half of the fourth.
Offensively, junior Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak) and sophomore Ciara Santos (Lansing/Everett) each went 2-for-2. Coshow and Nielsen also had two hits apiece. In the circle, senior Katie Harper (Vassar) tossed the complete game victory. She allowed two hits, while striking out nine and walking only one batter.
After a scoreless first two innings against Regis, Olivet scored four times in the third inning. Freshman Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic) drove in the first run before a wild pitch scored the second run. Junior Bridget Lathers (Grass Lake/Lumen Christi) reached on an infield single and scored on Boss' second home run of the day.
The Comets then sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the fourth inning. The first three batters in the inning got on base with singles. Hurosky then hit a 1-0 pitch over the fence in leftfield. Following another hit and out, Coshow blasted a two-run home run. A couple errors allowed the seventh run to score.
For the game, Olivet had 13 total hits with nine different players having at least one hit apiece. Greene, Lathers, Lenard and senior Jenny Robbins (Fenton) each went 2-for-3. Scoring twice were Greene, Lathers and Lenard. In the circle, junior Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) scattered seven hits in five innings to earn her first win of the 2011 season. She struck out eight batters and threw exactly 100 pitches.
After an off day tomorrow, the Comets will play two more games on Wednesday morning at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. Olivet plays Northland (Wis.) College at 9 a.m., followed by a game against Newbury (Mass.) College.
