Softball team sweeps Concordia, 7-2 and 2-1
The Olivet College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader today at Concordia University. The Comets, who improve to 15-3 with the sweep, won the first game, 7-2, and rallied to win the nightcap, 2-1.

In the first inning of the opener, freshman Danielle Vespa (St. Clair Shores/Univ. Liggett) and senior Kacie Rosecrants (Parma/Western) drew back-to-back walks, and both came around to score on a double by senior Kacey Darling (Hartford). Olivet stretched its lead to 3-0 in the second inning when freshman Mallory Schug (Climax/Galesburg-Augusta) doubled down the left field line and scored on a single by senior Cassie Bowerman (Quincy).
The Comets put the game out of reach with a three-run fifth inning. Senior Anna Braner (Belmond, Iowa/Marshall) led off the frame with a single, went to second on error and scored on a triple to the right-centerfield gap by senior Heidi Wear (Hastings/Wayland Union). Wear scored on Vespa's single. Freshman Cortney Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) came into run for Vespa. Later in the inning, Wernette came around to score on a double by senior Felicia Smith (Spring Lake).
After the Cardinals scored a run in the bottom half of the fifth, freshman Courtney Osborn (Dorr/Wayland Union) scored an unearned run for the Comets in the top half of the sixth. Concordia tallied an unearned run in the seventh.
For the game, Wear was 3-for-4. Schug had two hits. In the circle, sophomore Katie Harper (Vassar) improved to 8-1 on the season with a complete game, seven-hitter. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.
In the nightcap, Olivet took a 1-0 lead with a run in the third. Junior Jenny Robbins (Fenton) reached base on an error, advanced to second on a single by Braner and scored on a pinch-hit single by Vespa. The Cardinals tied the game in the top half of the sixth. The Comets scored the game-winner in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Schug singled, Rosecrants singled and Darling walked to load the bases with one out. Smith then walked to bring home Schug. Concordia went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Each team finished the game with five hits. Olivet's Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) earned the pitching win, giving up just one earned run on five hits in seven innings.
The Comets resume Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Wednesday when they travel to play Saint Mary's (Ind.) College at 3:30 p.m.
