Softball team sweeps Senior Day doubleheader from Rochester, 8-0 and 3-2
The Olivet College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Rochester College this afternoon in Olivet. The Comets won the first game, 8-0, in six innings and took the nightcap, 3-2.

The Olivet College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Rochester College this afternoon in Olivet. The Comets won the first game, 8-0, in six innings and took the nightcap, 3-2.
In the opener, Olivet scored one run in the second inning, three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in each the fifth and sixth innings to put an early ending to the game due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Offensively, senior Felicia Smith (Spring Lake) went 3-for-3 (one double and two singles) and drove in three runs. Senior Heidi Wear (Hastings/Wayland Union) had two hits. Senior Kacie Rosecrants (Parma/Western) walked twice and scored two runs. Freshman Cortney Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) hit a two-run double. Senior Anna Braner (Belmond, Iowa/Marshall) was on base safely three times and stole one base.
In the circle, sophomore Katie Harper (Vassar) was near perfect, facing only one batter more than the minimum and allowing one base hit. She struck out seven.
In the nightcap, the Comets scored one run in the second. The Warriors came back to tie the game at 1-1 with an unearned run in the fourth. Olivet regained the lead at 3-2 with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. After having the leadoff batter thrown out at the plate, Rochester pushed across one run in the sixth inning.
For the game, senior Amanda Egmer (Constantine) had two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Freshman Nicole Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) walked and drove in a run with a double in her other plate appearance. In the circle, freshman Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs (one earned) off seven hits in 5.2 innings. Harper came in to finish the game and earned her first save of the season.
The Comets are scheduled to complete a suspended game and play the second game of a doubleheader tomorrow at Calvin College, starting at 3:30 p.m.
NOTE: With her three hits today, Wear became Olivet's career leader with 127. The previous record was 125 by Jill Shufelt. With her stolen base in game one, Braner tied the Olivet career record.
