The Olivet College softball team suffered two losses this morning in its second day of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. In their first game, the Comets fell to Salem State (Mass.) College, 4-3, and in their second game, they dropped a 6-2 decision to Drew (N.J.) University.
Salem State ripped a pair of two-run home runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Olivet scored its three runs in the third inning. With one out, junior Heidi Wear (Hastings/Wayland Union) hit a double and then scored the first run on an error by the Salem State third-baseman. The other two runs came on a two-run double by sophomore Jenny Robbins (Fenton).
Offensively, junior Kacie Rosecrants (Parma/Western) reached base three times, including twice with singles into leftfield. In the circle, sophomore Karlie McManaman (Williamston) picked-up the loss. She threw four innings and allowed just two hits and three earned runs, while striking out five. In relief, freshman Katie Harper (Vassar) pitched three scoreless innings and struck out five.
Drew scored two runs in each of the first three innings. The Comets rallied with two runs in the seventh inning. Wear was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Rosecrants delivered a double to the left-centerfield gap to score Wear. Junior Kacey Darling (Hartford) drew a walk. Robbins reached on a fielder's choice with Rosecrants getting out at third base. A single down the leftfield line by junior Amanda Egmer (Constantine) loaded the bases. The pitcher then uncorked a wild pitch to move all the runners up one base and score Darling from third base. Two strikeouts ended the game.
Olivet was held to three hits, the double by Rosecrants, single by Egmer and a single in the third inning by sophomore Christine Cameron (Elkhart, Ind./Concord). Junior Beth DeLora (Muskegon/Oakridge) was charged with the loss. Like the first game, Harper threw three scoreless frames and struck out five.
The Comets (0-4) return to the field tomorrow when they play Lesley (Mass.) University at 5 p.m. and Ohio Wesleyan University at 7 p.m. Both games will be played at the Lee County Sports Complex.
