Sophomore Corie Greene (Brown City) pitched a complete game, three-hitter to lead the Olivet College softball team to a 7-0 win against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Adrian College today in Adrian. This was a make-up game after the second game of a doubleheader April 9 was postponed because of the cold weather.
The Comets (16-12, 4-8 MIAA) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning. Sophomore Christina Luna (Charlotte) walked to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Senior Shannon Hall's (Taylor/ Truman) singled moved her to third and a single into the left-center gap by sophomore Alisha Ridsdale (Laingsburg) scored Luna.
Olivet added another run in the second inning. Sophomore Kacie Rosecrants (Parma/Western) led off with a single to leftfield. Back-to-back groundouts advanced her to third base. Luna ripped a single up the middle to plate Rosecrants.
After two outs had been recorded in the fourth inning, the Comets pushed across five unearned runs. Sophomore Anna Braner (Belmond, Iowa/Marshall) started the rally with a single, followed by another single for Rosecrants. Sophomore Heidi Wear (Hastings/Wayland Union) loaded the bases when the Bulldog second baseman booted the ball. A throwing error by the Adrian shortstop allowed Braner to score and junior Amy Cooper (Bath) to take first base.
Luna hit a single into left-centerfield to score Rosecrants and Wear. Sophomore Kacey Darling (Hartford) walked to re-load the bases. Senior Shannon Hall (Taylor/Truman) kept the rally going with a two-run single. In the top half of the sixth and seventh innings, Greene retired the Bulldogs in order.
Offensively, Olivet had nine hits and all nine were singles. Hall, Luna and Rosecrants led the way with two hits each. Luna collected three RBI and scored two runs. Hall had two RBI, while Rosecrants also scored twice. In the circle, Greene needed 103 pitches to get the complete game victory and allowed only one base runner to reach third base. She struck out six and walked no batters.
The Comets will conclude their regular season schedule this week with two doubleheaders. The first one is Wednesday when Olivet hosts Kalamazoo College at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Comets travel to play Albion College at 1 p.m.
