Softball team sweeps MIAA doubleheader from Tri-State, 3-2 and 9-5
The Olivet College softball team swept a doubleheader from Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Tri-State (Ind.) University this afternoon in Angola. The Comets (18-8, 4-4 MIAA) won by scores of 3-2 and 9-5.

The Olivet College softball team swept a doubleheader from Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Tri-State (Ind.) University this afternoon in Angola. The Comets (18-8, 4-4 MIAA) won by scores of 3-2 and 9-5.
In the first game, the Thunder (15-15, 3-3 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. Olivet tied the game at 1-1 in the second on a home run to leftfield by freshman Kacey Darling (Hartford). The Comets scored a run in the third inning when freshman Kacie Rosecrants (Parma/Western) laced a single in the left-center gap to score freshman Katie Walker (Lansing/Everett).
In the fifth, freshman Heidi Wear (Hastings/Wayland) scored on a RBI single by Walker. Tri-State tallied a run in its half of the fifth inning. With one out in the seventh inning, the Thunder had runners on second and third base, but could not push across a run.
At the plate, six different Comets had a base hit. Besides Darling's homer, extra base hits were doubles by Rosecrants and Walker. Senior Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City) went the distance, allowing six hits, while striking out four and walking one.
In the nightcap, Tri-State scored an unearned run in top half of the third inning. Olivet came back with four runs in the bottom half of the third. With the bases loaded, freshman Danielle Martin (Lansing/Catholic Central) ripped the ball to deep left field, and the ball dropped between the fence and the outfielder. All base runners came around to score. Back-to-back passed balls scored Martin with the fourth run.
The Thunder made the score with 4-3 with single tallies in both the fourth and sixth innings. The Comets came back with five runs on six hits in their half of the sixth. Highlighting the inning was a solo homer by Darling and a two-run double by Walker.
For the game, Olivet had 10 hits. Walker was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Freshman Heather Jones (Trenton) scored twice, while Martin drove in three. In the circle, sophomore Kim Green (Portland) started and pitched four innings to gain the victory. She gave up three hits and two runs. Anderson finished the game to earn the save, allowing three hits and three runs. She struck out three and walked two batters.
Olivet is back in action Saturday, April 15, when it travels to play Hope College at 1 p.m.
