The softball team lost two games to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Calvin College this afternoon in Grand Rapids. The Lady Comets (15-11, 6-4 MIAA) were shutout, 2-0, in the first game and lost the nightcap, 6-4.
In the first game, the Knights (17-9, 7-1 MIAA) scored their runs in the second inning. Olivet had its chances to score runs, leaving seven runners stranded on the bases.
At the plate, the Comets collected five base hits. Shannon Hall (Taylor Truman), Heather Hinesman (Hudson), Katelan Schoen (Climax-Scotts), Jill Shufelt (Millington) and Beth Shunkwiler (Berrien Center/Berrien Springs) each had a single. In the circle, junior Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City) was the hard luck loser, pitching six innings and allowing three base hits.
After Calvin scored two runs in the second inning, Olivet answered with a run in each of the next four innings to take a 4-2 lead after five innings. A Comet error with two outs in the sixth inning led to four unearned runs for the Knights.
Olivet also had five hits in the nightcap, including two by Jessica Schmansky (Clarkston/Waterford Our Lady of Lakes). Anderson was again the tough-luck loser in the circle after throwing seven innings. She gave up eight hits and two earned runs.
The Comets will take a break from MIAA play Monday, April 18, when it travels for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Rochester College.
