Softball team sweeps two games at Gene Cusic Classic
The softball team swept two games today in its second day of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Lady Comets beat Rockford (Ill.) College, 3-1, in the first game, and then defeated Carlow (Pa.) University, 9-0, in the second game.

The softball team swept two games today in its second day of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Lady Comets beat Rockford (Ill.) College, 3-1, in the first game, and then defeated Carlow (Pa.) University, 9-0, in the second game.
Against Rockford, senior Beth Shunkwiler (Berrien Center/Berrien Springs) hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Olivet. The Regents answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth. The Comets added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on a home run by sophomore Katelan Schoen (Climax-Scotts).
At the plate, senior Jill Shufelt (Millington) had three base hits and scored a run. In the circle, junior Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City) pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out eight batters.
Against Carlow, Olivet tallied four runs in the first, two runs in the second and three runs in the third to end the game after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Shufelt was three-for-three with a double and two singles. She also scored three run and drove in three runs. Shunkwiler had two doubles and three RBI. Senior Jenn Newland (Tekonsha) collected two base hits and scored three times.
Freshman Kim Green (Portland) picked-up her first collegiate win as she tossed three innings, allowing one hit. Junior Carrie Abbott (Bad Axe) pitched two innings allowed a hit and struck out three.
The Comets will take tomorrow off and play two games Wednesday. At 9 a.m., they will play Hiram (Ohio) College, followed by a 1 p.m. game versus Lakeland (Wisc.) College.
