Softball team splits doubleheader at Huntington (Ind.);
The Olivet College softball team split a doubleheader this afternoon at non-league foe Huntington (Ind.) College. The Lady Comets (19-15) lost the first game, 9-8, in eight innings. They rebounded to win the nightcap, 8-0, which ended after five innings because of the mercy rule.

The Olivet College softball team split a doubleheader this afternoon at non-league foe Huntington (Ind.) College. The Lady Comets (19-15) lost the first game, 9-8, in eight innings. They rebounded to win the nightcap, 8-0, which ended after five innings because of the mercy rule.
In the first game, Olivet rallied from a 7-4 deficit after four innings to force extra innings. In the fifth inning, the Comets scored two runs on RBI singles by senior Taneisha Pointer (Lansing Everett High School) and junior Jill Shufelt (Millington High School).
Olivet scored the tying run in the seventh when senior Kari Munson (Lansing Eastern High School) led the inning off with a triple to right field. Junior Beth Shunkwiler (Berrien Center/Berrien Springs High School) drove in Munson. In the eighth, the Comets pushed a run across the plate on a double by Munson. The Foresters scored the winning runs on a two-out bases loaded double.
For the game, senior Kim Horanburg (Grand Ledge High School) was four-for-four with two RBIs. Munson and Shufelt collected three hits apiece, and Munson scored twice. Sophomore Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City High School) started the game in the pitching circle and tossed four and two-thirds innings. She allowed six hits and seven runs (five earned) while striking out six. In relief, junior Jenn Newland (Tekonsha High School) was tagged with the loss.
In the nightcap, Olivet scored early and often, scoring four runs in the first inning, three in the third and one in the fourth.
Senior Jenna Little (Orntonville Brandon High School) led the Comets with two hits, including a home run. She scored two runs and drove in two. Shunkwiler also had two hits and two runs scored. Horanburg had two RBIs. Newland earned the victory in the circle. She gave up two hits, struck out six and walked one.
