Softball team sweeps Rochester, 9-0 and 10-0; Anderson & Green combine to throw no-hitter in game one

Sophomores Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City High School) and Stephanie Green (Leroy/Pine River High School) combined to no-hit Rochester in the first game. In the nightcap, junior Jenn Newland (Tekonsha High School) and sophomore Carrie Abbott (Bad Axe High School) combined to throw a one-hitter.
In the first game, the Comets sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and took a 5-0 lead. In the second inning, Olivet batted around score three more runs for an 8-0 lead. The Comets added an unearned run in the third inning to close the scoring.
Offensively, Newland reached base safely twice on bunt singles and came around to score both times. Seniors Theresa Flowers (Waterford Kettering High School) and Kim Horanburg (Grand Ledge High School) also scored two runs. Seniors Jenna Little (Ortonville Brandon High School) and Taneisha Pointer (Lansing Everett High School) had two RBIs apiece. Anderson pitched the first three innings and struck out three. Green tossed two innings and did not allow a base runner.
After scoring two runs in the first inning and one in the third, Olivet sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the fourth inning. In the inning, six different batters drove in a run and seven different players scored.
At the plate, the Comets banged out 10 hits, including two each by Newland and Pointer. Newland also scored twice. Pointer and Horanburg had three and two RBIs, respectively. In the circle, Newland pitched four innings, allowing the only hit in the first inning. Abbott tossed one inning.
The Comets will resume Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play at Alma College on Saturday, April 24. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
