Softball team splits doubleheader against Saint Mary’s
The Olivet College softball team split a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader against Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College this afternoon in Olivet. The Lady Comets (13-11, 6-6 MIAA) lost the first game, 8-6. They banged out 11 hits to win the nightcap, 3-2.

The Olivet College softball team split a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader against Saint Mary's (Ind.) College this afternoon in Olivet. The Lady Comets (13-11, 6-6 MIAA) lost the first game, 8-6. They banged out 11 hits to win the nightcap, 3-2.
The first game was tied 1-1 after one inning of play. In the top of second inning, the Belles scored five runs to take a 6-1 lead. Olivet battled back with three runs in its half of the second inning. The Comets added single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to trim the deficit to one run, 7-6. Saint Mary's closed the scoring with an insurance run in the seventh.
At the plate, junior Beth Shunkwiler (Berrien Center/Berrien Springs High School) was four-for-four with a double and two runs scored. Senior Kim Horanburg (Grand Ledge High School) collected two hits. Senior Kari Munson (Lansing Eastern High School) walked twice and scored both times. In the pitching circle, sophomore Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City High School) suffered the loss, striking out seven.
In the nightcap, senior Theresa Flowers (Waterford Kettering High School) scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Lindsey Daniels (Galesburg Augusta High School). The Belles tied the game in the third inning. Senior Taneisha Pointer (Lansing Everett High School), who led off the fourth inning with a triple to right field, scored in the fourth inning on a two-out single by junior Jenn Newland (Tekonsha High School).
The Comets scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning. Horanburg started the rally with a double to right center. She moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by senior Jenna Little (Ortonville Brandon High School), and scored on a wild pitch.
Shunkwiler remained perfect in the doubleheader with three hits and a walk in her four plate appearances. Little and Newland had two hits apiece. Newland went the distance and earned the win. She scattered five hits, allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out seven batters.
The Comets will host Defiance (Ohio) College for a non-league twinbill tomorrow, April 14, at 3:30 p.m.
