UOlivet wins five-set match at Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The University of Olivet men's volleyball team posted a five-set victory over Franklin (Ind.) College this evening at the Spurlock Center. The Comets won the first two sets before the Grizzlies won the next two sets to even the match. Olivet raced out an 8-1 lead in the fifth set en route to a 15-9 victory to win the match, 3-2.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Olivet defeated Franklin 25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 24-26, 15-9

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The early part of the opening set was close, as neither team was able to gain a significant edge. With the score knotted at 13-13, the Comets used a 4-0 run to go up 17-13. The run propelled Olivet to a 25-18 victory in set one.
- The second set was like the first set, as Olivet strung together three straight points to turn a 10-10 tie into a 13-10 lead. The Comets maintained the lead for the rest of the set, winning it by a 25-17 final.
- In the third set, the Grizzlies had a 3-0 scoring run to take an 11-8 lead. Olivet cut its deficit down to a point before Franklin took advantage of four Comet attack errors to push its lead five points, 17-12. The Grizzlies did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the set.
- The beginning of the fourth set was back-and-forth, as there were several tied scores and lead changes. Franklin took the largest lead for either team at 16-14. Olivet countered with a 5-0 run for a 19-16 lead. The Comets held the lead until the Grizzlies ended the set a 6-2 run to win it by a 26-24 score and force the deciding set.
- Olivet scored the first two points of the fifth set. Franklin scored the next point. The Comets then went on a 6-0 spurt, including three aces, to seize an 8-1 lead. Olivet did not give up the advantage for the remainder of the set, winning it by a 15-9 final.
FOR THE COMETS
- Freshman Silas Martin slammed down 16 of Olivet's 54 kills. He also had five service aces to tie the single-match UOlivet record and break the five-set record.
- Sophomore Amarion Lawson was next with 14 kills, followed by sophomore Aiden Chamblee with seven.
- Senior Will Mensching recorded 44 set assists.
- Junior Matthew Tollar collected 14 digs.
UP NEXT
- Olivet ends its season tomorrow with a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match at Wabash (Ind.) College. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
