Men’s volleyball team upended by Fontbonne in three sets

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Olivet College men's volleyball team was on the losing end of a three-set match to Fontbonne (Mo.) University in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) match tonight at Mabee Gymnasium.
- Final Score: Fontbonne defeated Olivet 25-19, 25-13, 25-19
- Location: Mabee Gymnasium; St. Louis, Missouri
- Records: Olivet 8-14 overall, 1-6 MCVL; Fontbonne 13-11 overall, 3-4 MCVL
- The Griffins never trailed in the opening set.
- The Comets led 4-3 in the second set before Fontbonne scored the next three points to go up 6-4. From there, the Griffins maintained their advantage for the rest of the set.
- In the third set, Fontbonne led by four points twice. After the second time a 9-5, Olivet used a kill, two Griffin attack errors and a service ace to even the score. The teams traded 2-0 runs to level the score 11-11. Fontbonne had back-to-back kills to take the lead, which it did not relinquish for the remainder of the set.
- Junior Deontay Thomas had eight of the 27 Olivet kills.
- Junior Kai Hartman and sophomore Ethan Valente were next with seven and six, respectively.
- Junior Everett Haynes dished out 18 set assists.
- Hartman collected a team-best six digs.
- Fontbonne finished the match with 40 kills and posted a .353 attack percentage.
- Joseph Huster led all players with 10 kills.
- Running a 6-2 system, Alex Gantt and Nate Paasch split time at setter, recording 16 and 12 assists, respectively.
- Lee Kreutzman and Ryan Taylor each registered a match-high nine digs.
- The Comets close out their 2023 season tomorrow with a 2 p.m. match at Wabash (Ind.) College.
